"Understanding Black & White"
by Don Toothaker-MA
Monday, October 12, 7:30 PMTonight’s speaker is a friend to GLPA and very well known to us having presented here several times as well as judging both prints and projected images. He will also be the print judge for the November competition. I must say he is a better friend to the men of the club than the woman having been a judge at our ’One Shot’ Men Vs. Women competition where the woman lost on a few occasions when he was one of the judges.
This presentation is one you won’t want to miss. The world of Monochrome is not only alive and well in the digital age, but it is arguably better than ever. Today's digital cameras are highly evolved creative tools and there is an endless array of options for editing your black and white photos, but first we must learn to ‘see’ in black and white. Using an array of images and text we will discuss the various attributes of strong monochromatic images and how to identify them visually, with our cameras, and with our final images.
Primarily a self-taught photographer, Don has been enthusiastically photographing a variety of subjects for the past 20 years and teaching others as well. As the Director of Photo Adventures for Hunts Photo and Video in Massachusetts, Don leads instructional photo walks and photography workshops locally, nationally, and internationally. He is committed to exploring and sharing the beauty of his native New England, and other regions of the world, through imagery, coaching, and instructing. Don uses both Nikon and Fuji camera systems and is a juried member of Nikon Professional Services.
Don displays his work at www.toothakerphoto.com as well as daily posts to Instagram.
