Our last program in January is a wonderful teaching program which applies to both digital images and prints. This program focuses on producing strong black and white images often forgotten in our digital color world, starting with learning to recognize what types of images make great black and white photographs. Not all are candidates but some can be striking and powerful when in a black and white medium. Recognize the conditions that will result in great images and learn how to process black and white with Photoshop and other software applications.

Our speaker comes to us from Virginia and has had a passion for photography for nearly 30 years. Like most photographers, he started taking pictures of vacations and his family. His interests than branched out from family vacations to nature photography, such as landscapes, birds, and flowers; travel photography with the goal of capturing the culture of his destinations; and urban landscapes… street, people, and decay. Since he started with film, he was compelled to learn every aspect of development and had built his own darkroom to process his images but like many he has now converted to the digital format. For his nature photography, he is a purist, using post-processing software at a minimum. For all other subject matters, he finds digital photography allows a limitless freedom of expression. Each image can be manipulated in multiple ways to express a desired mood or state of mind. He also has a collection of antique cameras and often still shoots film which he processes at home and then transfers to a digital image. In college, he studied and obtained a degree in graphic arts which has aided him in developing perspective and has impacted on how he composes his images
