"A Photojournalist's Travel Log"

We are pleased to have back with us Boston Globe photojournalist Essdras M Suarez, Since his last visit at GLPA, Essdras has won a second Pulitzer Prize; a Spot News Pulitzer as part of the Boston Globe Editorial staff on their coverage of the Boston Marathon Bombing. Come and share Essdras visual records of daily life from near and afar. Catch a glimpse of his photographic style while documenting quotidian activities as he emphasizes his belief of developing a strong and personal style while shooting in familiar surroundings. So one can then approach the visual documenting of distant places, people and culture with a confident hand while camera in hand. He will share images with us from his two decades as a shooter. From the Columbine Massacre to Irag war, to the Indonesia Tsunami, to the Crossing the Divide project, he will share it all with us through his photos.

Our speaker has been working as a photojournalist for the Boston Globe since 2002 and prior to that was with the Rockey Mountain News, Denver from 1995-2001. His numerous awards include the Robert Kennedy International PJ Award, Headliner Awards for International PJ and Feature, Association of Newspaper & Editors, the Colorado Press Association, and the Boston Press Association. His work has taken him to Canada, US, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, Curacao, Colombia, Brazil, Ecuador, Haiti, Puerto, Rico, Cuba, Cape Verde, Spain, France, Italy, Norway, Belarus, Turkey, Russia, China, Japan, Laos, Cambodia, Israel, Palestine, Kuwait, Iraq, Sudan, Egypt and Indonesia.

Mr. Suarez has been a Photojournalism adjunct professor at Boston University since 2013. He has been a featured speaker at Boston University, Wellesley College, Northeastern University, University of Florida and other institutions of higher learning. Along with the New England Camera Council Conference, and several Media Matters Conferences in Boston and more, he currently leads photo-workshops in Cuba for Road Scholar. He has covered the Iraq war, Haiti conflict, Tsunami aftermath, and Gaza evacuation among other international news stories. Nationally he has covered stories like the Columbine shooting, Columbia space shuttle disaster and Sandy Hook Elementary shooting.

Born in Panama, he graduated from the University of Florida in 1993 with Bachelor in Science of Journalism specializing in Photojournalism and he received the titled of Alumnus of Distinction from the University of Florida in 2010. A Nikon Legend behind the Lens since 1997, he is also a US Department of State Photojournalism speaker and presenter for Latin American countries.
