"The Fine Art Print"
by John Gregor-MN
Monday, October 2, 7:30 PM

Photoshop can appear to be a dauntingly complex program, but most photographers’ needs are deceivingly simple-they just want to make good looking prints from their images. This presentation is an in-depth look at the process of making high-quality fine art prints. John will conduct a comprehensive exploration of the digital image workflow, from maximizing the quality of the digital original, to massaging pixels to perfect tone, color and sharpness using Lightroom, and Adobe Photoshop. He will demonstrate his digital workflow from Raw conversion to finishing techniques in Photoshop including digital burning and dodging techniques, output sharpening, monitor calibration, and color matching for fine art prints. This presentation is straightforward and practical yet precise enough for the most demanding fine art photographer.

Our first speaker for October comes to us from Minnesota through Maine and has a Masters of Education with an emphasis in photographic literacy. He earned his BA from the University of Minnesota with a degree entitled ’Documentary Expression of American Culture through Photography’. During his career John has worked on some interesting projects and photographed for some great publications, including among others; two years as the Official Track Photographer at Canterbury Downs Racetrack, a month long photographic project in Africa documenting the first attempted kayak decent of the Blue Nile from Lake Victoria to Lake Albert, an on-going photography research project on the horse-mounted military musical bands remaining worldwide and photography documentation of over 75 Scientific and Natural Areas in Minnesota funded by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources and the Nature Conservancy resulting in numerous publications. His work on the use of filters in landscape photography was published as an article in Outdoor Photographer Magazine. John’s photographic prints have been exhibited in numerous galleries, museums and collections throughout the world. He is a proud producer of all aspects of his art from concept to print to final frame.

He lives near Two Harbors where he owns and operates ColdSnap Photography which provides commercial photography and photographic workshops. www.coldsnap.com
