Print Group

Bob Pelland, Group Leader

(available to members only)

The Print Group is an informal group of printmakers that meets once a month on an off night during the Association season. For the 2023-2024 we will be meeting on Tuesdays. Please check the club calendar found on the home page for the exact date each month. This activity is limited to members of the Association.

Our goal is to help all of us become better printmakers. All skill levels are welcome as are prints from any source. On most months an attendee may bring up to five prints for presentation and comment. And please, please, feel free to attend even if you do not have any prints to present, are shy about standing before a group, or are just venturing into printing. This is a friendly learning/teaching group and all are welcome to participate or to just look on. On those months in which we do a special topic session, each member may bring one or two prints for comment if time permits and the group is willing to stay.

Members who are presenting prints will stand before the group and place their prints in the viewing box. The maker can ask the group about specific problems or questions they have relating to the image itself or in the making of the print. Generally the presenter will describe what they are trying to accomplish with that print and what difficulties they may be trying to resolve. Many participants chose to bring prints that they are working on for monthly competition. We recommend 7 x 10 or larger prints to help the other members see them more easily, but any print size is allowed. Come show us what you have been doing even if you're not looking for comments.

The primary feedback from the group members is in the form of comments on whether or not they feel the maker has achieved his/her goal in making the print, whether or not the image is effective, and how to improve the image. Feedback from the group is informal (no scoring involved). We will discuss editing techniques used in primarily Photoshop, Elements, and Lightroom. Any other print making related questions are welcome and encouraged. Some of the topics often touched on during the discussions include: composition, matting, paper choices, color management and many more.

Previously, I presented four brief tutorials at the group meetings on the printing process that I use. The notes for those tutorials are now posted on the club website's Activity Page under the "How To's" section. The articles are titled: "Printing Part 1: Editing Environment", "Printing Part 2: Monitor Calibration", "Printing Part 3: Soft Proofing In Lightroom Classic" and "Printing Part 4: The Print Module in Lightroom Classic". I would encourage you to take a look at these articles, particularly if you are a novice printer. Also, I'm looking for suggestions for future topics.

Come on down and check us out for a fun, friendly, and informative evening. Again, all skill levels are welcome!
